These payments are typically awarded for service-connected disabilities (disability compensation), financial need (pension), or specific specialized circumstances (Special Monthly Compensation\/Pension \u2013 SMC (SMP)). A VA retroactive award (or back pay) is\u00a0a lump-sum payment issued to a veteran, or eligible dependents, to compensate for disability benefits or pension owed between an approved claim&#8217;s\u00a0effective date\u00a0and the date the claim is awarded.
