There is a three-month grace period, meaning if you apply for or renew CalFresh benefits on June 1 without meeting the requirements, your benefits will end on Sept. 1.<\/p>\n<p>The new rules apply to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdss.ca.gov\/inforesources\/calfresh\/abawd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Able-Bodied Adults Without Dependents (ABAWD)<\/a>\u00a0who are applying for or renewing CalFresh benefits. ABAWDs are defined as people who:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Are between the ages of 18 and 64<\/li>\n<li>Are not living with a child under age 14<\/li>\n<li>Are physically and mentally able to work<\/li>\n<li>Are not pregnant<\/li>\n<li>Do not have a verified disability<\/li>\n<li>Do not meet any other federal exemption criteria<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>This rule\u00a0does\u00a0not\u00a0apply\u00a0to all\u00a0CalFresh recipients. Exemptions include:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>People under 18 or over 64<\/li>\n<li>People living with a child under the age of 14<\/li>\n<li>Pregnant individuals<\/li>\n<li>People living with a verified physical or mental limitation<\/li>\n<li>People who identify as Indian, Urban Indian, or California Indian under the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ihs.gov\/ihcia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Indian Health Care Improvement Act<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Individuals who meet another federal exemption<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This is one in a series of benefit impacts that phase in from 2026-2028.
